Tips for Getting the Best Prices for Your Antiques and Collectibles

There's still snow in the yard, but my crocus and tulips are beginning to poke up through the ground, letting me know that spring is finally on its design! As folks initiate their spring cleaning, lots of great vintage toys, books, kitchen accessories, knick knacks, pottery, home decor, furniture, and more will find their way into spring clean-up piles or be offered at rummage sales and thrift shops. This is the best time of year for those of us who like to make a little money selling antique and vintage collectible items. A lot of this stuff can be picked up for a song (or free, if you don't object to rummaging through trash piles and dumpsters) and sold at a profit.

Sometimes you can pick up vintage collectibles or antiques for a cheap price at estate auctions, but I've found that there are often collectors explain who will bid the item up to a point where, if you top their price, you've blown your potential profit. However, attending estate auctions is an excellent way to learn what is in demand and what people are willing to pay for it to add to their own collection. There have been a few times I've found treasures in the bottom of a box lot (a box of miscellania that may or not be related items) and made a shipshape profit.

There are a lot of guide books out there that give values on vintage and collectible items, but personally I've found the best way to region a price is to do some research on eBay or other online auction sites, and see what is selling and for how much. The mark guide may tell you that your vintage purple and pink whoopdeedoo is worth $500, which is great, but the trick is finding someone who wants to pay that much for it. Online auction sites give you a more realistic thought of what you may be able to sell that whoopdeedoo for, and how many people are interested in buying such a thing.

You may have amassed your own collection of antique or vintage items, or inherited a collection, that you are ready to part with. If you have a large collection, consider hiring an appraiser to do a walk-through and tell you if what you have is worth anything. This is not the same as having the items appraised for value, but at least you will know if it will be worth the effort to sell your collectibles.

The appraiser can give you advice about which of your collectibles or antiques are suitable for an auction house, and what should go into a rummage sale or other sales venue. If the appraiser indicates that you have some high-value antiques or collectibles, have them properly appraised for value and keep the narrate in a safe place with other important documents.

A few notes about appraisers: First, be sure the appraiser is accredited by a national appraisal association. Next, NEVER sell an item to an appraiser who has offered to buy it from you if he has personally appraised the item himself, or charges you a fee based on the item's value. You're setting yourself up to procure taken.

Auction Options (say that three times fast!)

High-end auction houses, either regional or national, are the best venue for selling an antique or collectible that has a high value. These auctions houses will get the best sign for you, but will charge a fee that is a percentage of the selling designate. You may also have to pay fees for cataloguing, insurance, or other services. Found out approximately what it will cost you to sell this item before you make the commitment.

Local auction houses draw smaller crowds and lower bids than regional or national houses, but can be a more convenient venue for collectibles and antiques of moderate value. Usually, only items of a similar nature are included in the auction. These auctions may be catalogued and/or posted online, drawing bidders from outside the local area. Again, find out what fees you can expect to pay.

Community auctions may be held weekly and include all different types of items, collectible, antique, secondhand, and otherwise. These auctions are a splendid venue for selling vintage collectibles and antiques of lesser value.

Online auctions reach millions of potential bidders, and you might be surprised how much you can salvage for a collectible item! As I suggested before, research how much of a demand there is for your particular collectible item and how much this type of collectible has sold for in the past. There's no guarantee you'll get comparable bids but it's a good indicator. If there are many of the same item currently up for lisp, it might be worth waiting to list your auction when there isn't a glut of them available. If you don't want to take a chance on getting less than you want, you can set a reserve or buy-it-now price. For some folks, part of the fun of participating in an auction involves the challenge of winning and they will sometimes pay an extravagant amount for the privilege. By setting a predetermined tag, you might actually lose money! It's partly luck, and partly a judgement call that comes from experience.

Other selling options:

Rummage sales and flea markets are the best way to sell vintage items with low values. Ticket your collectibles as your research indicates, but be willing to haggle on the price later in the day on items that haven't sold.

Antique shops. Most will either buy the item from you and re-sell it, or sell on consignment. If you sell directly to the shop, don't expect them to pay you what it's worth. If they sell on consignment, derive an agreement in writing that protects your ownership of the collectible or antique.

Antique malls. If you have a sizeable collection, consider renting a space in an antique mall. Most antique malls will handle the selling for you, and charge either a commission or monthly rental fee, or both. All you need to do is mark prices on your items and set up your individual display in the space they provide you. You may have to furnish your own display cases, tables, or shelves.

Consignment shops will sell items for you, but usually charge a high percentage of the selling mark, and they may reduce the designate if your item doesn't sell in a reasonable amount of time. Get an agreement in writing that protects your ownership and states how soon after the sale you will be paid.

It doesn't matter what type of vintage collectible you have, there are people out there who pick up it. Do an online search for "(type of item) collectors" and you will surely find resources for information about your collectibles, for selling your collectibles, and people who are willing to consume them. Unbiased assume care to do some research to estimate the value of your vintage collectible so you don't sell it for a pittance, only to see it featured on the Antiques Roadshow and find out it was worth a fortune!

Not all thrift stores are alike. Some are charitable. Some are business ventures, run as mom-and-pop type shops. But aside from wanting your money to go to a worthy cause, shopping in a charity-based thrift store often results in better finds; for professional antique dealers, amateur collectors, decorators or dreary lovers of unique items from bygone eras. More items are donated to charity-based shops, hence a better variety. In New Smyrna Beach, Florida, there are wonderful thrift stores that are associated with some worthy causes. I combined the best six in this write-up, based on availability of unique merchandise, pricing, location, charity and overall charm. Here are the best thrift stores that Novel Smyrna Beach has to offer.

Habitat For Humanity Thrift Shop

Located across from the New Smyrna Beach library on U.S.-1, the Habitat for Humanity builds homes for families in financial need. This is a popular cause and thrift store in general, with the vast majority of donated merchandise inside a store. There is also a bargain area outside, inaugurate early mornings during the week till twelve pm, and on Saturday till early afternoon. Sometimes the outside section has broken-down stock from inside at bargain prices. There are both paid employees and volunteers. Inside prices tend to be higher, but there is a wonderful selection of goods at affordable prices, ranging from antiques, collectibles, designer clothes, furniture, decorative items and jewelry. Lot's of vintage pins; prices range from three dollars and up. Good selection of glassware, paintings of all mediums, bed ware, toys, clothing, nick-knacks, and more. I have found some fantastic paintings in here, and quality retro costume jewelry.

This is a favorite of the local community in downtown N.S.B. Located off Canal Street, on Live Oak Street, also down the block from Bert Fish Hospital. The hospital owns this building, and the people are volunteers. All funds go into buying new equipment for the hospital, and the boutique often holds jewelry sales in the lobby of the hospital as well. There are some first-rate finds at affordable prices, including Depression- era glass, vintage purses, paintings, jewelry and vinyl records. I have found vintage Gucci purses, new oil paintings, and quality retro jewelry.

Down the road from Bert Fish Hospital, heading to Canal Street. This is volunteer as well, associated with First United Methodist Church. A unique setting, this thrift store is situated in a vintage Cracker house. Blooming inside, with some worthy finds that include glassware, clothes, jewelry, nick-knacks, books, toys. I have found some quality vintage leather Coach purses here.

This thrift store is located on beach-side, factual off Flagler Avenue, over the North Causeway Bridge. A quaint shop, affiliated with the neighboring Methodist Church. Volunteers are often the church members. Friendly atmosphere with some engaging items as well. Donated items include oil paintings, retro jewelry, purses, clothes, glassware, decorative items, appliances, books, electronics and more. There is a men's share and woman's portion for clothes. I have found vintage Taxco Mexican silver, lamps and paintings.

Located on U.S.-1 in the movie theater parking lot, is a fabulous store, with good finds. Volunteers as well. The thrift store benefits the drug free youth program for youths. Items are immense, ranging from mature lamps, appliances, lot's of clothing, nick-knacks, vinyl records, gently broken-down and vintage books, paintings, art work, decorative items, traditional toys, antiques, collectibles, furniture, garden items and jewelry. Some items are a dinky overpriced, but in general there can be some fantastic finds at affordable prices as well. I have found designer purses, which are only two dollars each, good oil paintings for under ten dollars, vintage books for two dollars each, and more.

The Goodwill Industries benefit the local neighborhood by providing jobs. They are one of the most widely known of thrift stores throughout America, and are most popular with collectors of all kinds. There is one located in Edgewater (four miles from N.S.B.), which is further down past the Drug Free Youth Thrift Store, heading south on U.S.-1. This Goodwill location is a bargain hunter's dream! I have found contemporary modern art oil paintings, quality prints, quality jewelry; including vintage costume, gold and silver, purses, pottery, cookie jars, vintage glassware, dishes and more. One can find just about everything here. Located in the Publix and Blockbuster parking lot, before the town of Oak Hill.

Fun, Free Things to Do in London, England, Any Time of Year

Everyone knows there are free concerts and plays commence to the public during the summer months in London, England, but did you realize there are many fun free activities all year round? Here are seven completely free things to do in London that I found particularly intriguing or have done myself and enjoyed, regardless of time of year. These are my favorites, even though there are many other excellent tried and true ideas for free fun in London, such as strolling through Hyde Park, people-watching at Trafalgar Square, or window-shopping on Oxford Street.

For each fun free activity in London, I provide enough detail to get you started, although double-checking routes, times and days of operation is always wise before you go. I assume that you will be getting around the city primarily via the London Underground. Where available, I give a website address so you can access further details and up to date information.

Walk across the Millennium Bridge (and back)

This 100 percent pedestrian bridge across the Thames had some engineering difficulties when first constructed (it swayed too noteworthy), but is now fully operational. It links the financial part of London near St. Paul's Cathedral to the Southbank at the Tate Recent and near Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. The views from the bridge are stellar and the modern steel bridge itself is called Norman Foster's "Blade of Light."

Underground: Mansion House (Blackfriars is closed until slow 2011)

Feel tiny by walking underneath a gigantic table at the Tate Modern.

Absolutely the best way to approach the Tate Current is from the Millennium Bridge, which leads directly to the former Bankside Power Dwelling converted to a modern art museum in 2000. The note I found most memorable was American artist Robert Therrien's oversized (2.5 times the usual) dining table and chairs, rendered in expresso wood with every detail. The whole point of the installation is to invent a point about scale as art and it works! I will warn you that the temptation to climb up onto one of the chairs is very strong. Even though this is one of the most well-liked art galleries in the world, admission is free to the permanent exhibits. Don't miss the turbine hall where exhibitions on a even grander scale are displayed.

Did you always wonder if English barristers and judges really wear white wigs with long curls in court even now? Join the studio audience for a BBC television or radio note.

Although there is a charge for the BBC studio tour, you can become part of a studio audience for a BBC show without any cost. I have even heard rumors that certain out-of-work Britons are being hired to sit in studio audiences for some talk shows. I would not bank on that, but you can regain free tickets if you view ahead. Venues vary and some are outside London. While you are at it, you could apply to appear on any number of shows from Antiques Roadshow to Young, Dumb, and Living Off Mum!

Browse at Harrods Food Halls, which stock everything from fresh meat and invent to the most expensive luxury food gifts.

I still remember my first visit to London in 1980 when I saw huge cuts of meat hanging from the ceiling in the Food Hall. The range of foods available is staggering. This is definitely worth a visit and browsing is free. The remainder of this elegant department store is also available for browsing. Among the products available for purchase: gold bullion. The store's "guidelines for visitors" include the following admonition:

"Ensure all clothing is super and presentable and that shoes are worn whilst in the store." That sounds reasonable.

The store is located at 87-135 Brompton Road, Knightsbridge. Hours are Monday through Saturday 10 am until 8 pm, noon to 6 pm on Sunday. The store is open on Bank Holidays.

Take in a free lunchtime concert at the Church of St Martin-in-the-Fields.

This storied Anglican Church has a rich musical heritage, including hosting Handel and possibly Mozart as visiting organists in the 18^th century. Professional caliber classical concerts at lunchtime feature pianists, string quartets, guitarists, and other soloists, choral and chamber groups.

St Martin-in-the-Fields is at the northeast corner of Trafalgar Square. Doors open at 12.30 pm for a 1:00 pm initiate. Lunchtime concerts normally take place on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. No tickets are required.

Look for Platform 9 ¾ at King's Cross Rail Station.

This is a must activity for any Harry Potter fan. If you collect it, you'll have a wonderful photo opportunity. In the Potter books and films, the Hogwarts students and their families travel right through a brick wall to reach Platform 9 ¾. If you are a Muggle, as I am, you may find that somewhat challenging. While you are there, enjoy the bustle of travelers going every which way at this major urban rail station in the heart of London.

These seven ideas are but the tip of the iceberg--some of my favorites and perhaps some ideas you had not expected. None are limited to a particular time of year. At all times, the entire city is jam-packed with opportunities to find something, learn something, experience something, connect with British history and culture, and just have a wonderful time without spending a single pence. One of the best ways to perform some extra cash is to get rid of unwanted items in a flea market booth. With this type of shrimp business there is no limit on what to sell or how much. The versatility and low overhead is likely to generate a substantial profit.

Organizing and setting up a flea market booth can be moderately challenging--especially for beginners. The first step is determining what items will be the best sellers at a flea market. Anything that is vintage from the 1940's or 1950's are sought after flea market items. This includes toys, kitchen serving sets, kitchen cookware and bakeware, ceramics, clothing and linens. Many people also like to collect old dolls and accessories. Antique guns and related advertising are also popular. Furniture and venerable photographs are also sought after collectables. Books and old magazines and newspapers are also top sellers. Visiting as many estate and community auctions as possible will help you find one of a kind items at rock bottom prices. Thrift stores, garage sales and online auction sites like shopgoodwill.com are also good locations to hunt for inexpensive treasures.

Gather together the merchandise you have chose to sell at the flea market. Some flea market vendors also bring along homemade seasonal crafts and unique or dried flowers that they sell.
